Podcast Episode 55: This is Liam Shaw of York Place Studios
It’s an absolute honour to have our overall Photographer of the Year 2018 on the Podcast today: The brilliant Liam Shaw. One half of the fab duo that is York Place Studios, not only did Liam win our Photographer of the Year in 2018, but he’s also third-overall in terms of Lifetime Awards won from us – with a quite staggering 21 Reportage Awards and 11 Story Awards to his name. On top of all those accolades, though, he’s also a lovely, lovely guy. Tune in today, as Liam talks all about:
the story behind his ‘birth to grave’ Reportage Award, whether he feels any pressure when becoming more well-known in the documentary field, working with the equally talented Dominique Shaw (who you can hear interviewed on episode 26 of the Podcast), tips on submitting to Awards, layered-imagery and the influence of street photography, a rock-and-a-hard-place question, and so much more…
Podcast Episode 54: This is Tobias Löhr
It was an absolute pleasure to chat to the fab Tobias Löhr for this week’s Podcast! Tobias is one of the very best documentary wedding photographers in Germany, and has won 9 Reportage Awards and 3 Story Awards. I remember coming across his work on Instagram a couple of years ago and just been so impressed by his compositions – really great to have been able to talk to him now. Tune in today, as Tobias talks all about:
his love of travel and street photography (he has a separate website for that, too), photographing his own son’s birth, the story behind one of his specific Reportage Awards, his approach for choosing images for Story Award submissions, getting married in Las Vegas, his huge TV watch-list, why moment trumps everything, and much more…
Podcast Episode 53: This is Sophie Callewaert
Such a pleasure to chat to the great Sophie Callewaert for this week’s Podcast episode! Sophie is one of Belgium’s best wedding photographers, with 9 Reportage Awards and 2 Story Awards under her belt, and, though I’ve only met her once very briefly, she’s a lovely person, and just really lovely to talk to. Tune in today, as Sophie talks about:
growing up in her family’s restaurant, personal projects, living a curious life, authenticity, what makes a good wedding photographer, ‘day in the life’ family sessions, driving from Belgium to Ireland for Doc Day, and much more…
Podcast Episode 52: This is Kristof Claeys
Excited to chat to the fantastic Kristof Claeys for episode 52 of the Podcast today! Kristof is one of the best wedding photographers in Belgium, was in our Top 30 Photographers of 2019, and has won a pretty staggering 9 Reportage and 6 Story Awards. He’s also a fantastic family photographer, and has already won 2 Reportage Family Awards and 2 Family Story Awards on our sister-site, This is Reportage: Family. Tune in today as Kristof talks about:
letting your clients be themselves, learning to fail, a momentous event that led to him making a 180 in his life, the story behind a couple of his wedding awards and a family story award too (that features a cat in every frame!), tips on submitting, what makes him happy, and so much more…
Podcast Episode 51: This is Alice Chapman
The Podcast is going to be a little bit different going forward, as, with the launch of This is Reportage: Family a few months ago – our sister-site for documentary family photography – we’re going to be featuring family photographers on the Podcast, as well as wedding photographers, too. It’s still going to be the same fun mix of photography, life and personal stories – as the Podcast has always been just as much – if not more so – about the *people*; their stories, what makes them tick – as it has been about the photography itself, but we’ll just be talking to photographers who specialise in both disciplines.
For some episodes I’ll be talking to people who specialise in families, in others I’ll be talking to people who only do weddings, and for others I’ll chat to people who do both. I hope that you’ll still want to listen to the photographers who work in a different field as to what you do, because the skills and tips we discuss really are virtually always *so* valid between both wedding and family coverage (and there’s often universal business advice, too) – but also because, as I’ve said, these Podcasts are really more about the people, and their life experiences and stories are always so interesting and insightful.
Today I’m really excited to be talking to the fab Alice Chapman. Alice is a documentary family photographer based in Cambridge in the UK, and is currently ranked no.1 in the UK after our first two Awards Collections on This is Reportage: Family, with 7 Reportage Family Awards and a Family Story Award too. Alice shares so much today, including:
her top tips for documentary family photography, the story behind one of her specific Reportage Family Awards, her journey into her photography career, which day she would choose to live over and over again, being on the other side of the camera and having her own family photographed, life in these corona times, children, plants and much, much more…
