I’m Derek, a documentary wedding photographer based in Essex, working across the UK.
I’ve been photographing weddings for over 14 years, with a simple approach: stay unobtrusive, keep things relaxed, and let real moments unfold naturally. I don’t direct the day or turn weddings into photoshoots — I focus on storytelling, capturing the genuine interactions, emotions, and atmosphere as they happen.
Most of my couples tell me they’re uncomfortable in front of the camera. That’s exactly how I like it. My role isn’t to pose people into something they’re not, but to give them space to be themselves. I work instinctively, blending in like a guest, anticipating moments rather than creating them.
Family plays a big part in my work. I’m always drawn to the quieter, emotional connections — parents, grandparents, and the small interactions that often become the most meaningful photographs over time. I also love weddings with energy and personality: great speeches, live music, busy dance floors, and people fully present in the moment.
I shoot digitally and on 35mm film, delivering an honest, timeless record of the day — photographs that feel real, unforced, and true to the experience of being there.
